Anadolu Health Sciences University, Gebze

The Anadolu Foundation began construction activity in the late 1990’s in Gebze with the Anadolu Health Village Project. Building a hospital in the first stage, a bone marrow center and an accommodation building for patients’ relatives in the second stage. Now designs for university buildings have been prepared to continue with the project. The university will be a “handicapped accessible” and “green”. Many firsts are to be hosted in this project.

Due to the fact that students on the planned campus will spend a large part of their lives in intensive training and research period, the university has been designed as a small scale urban plan concept. Some points of attraction were consciously placed to add color to the students’ lives, and spaces were created to increase the interaction between departments. The architecture of the project was developed to raise the curiosity of students, direct them to research, and support them for continuous improvement.

Laboratories were placed on the ends of buildings, and are visible from the outside to emphasize the importance of research in the laboratories. These laboratories can easily be viewed from the pedestrian ways, receiving maximum daylight, providing a productive working environment for researchers who spend a long portion of their day inside.

Statues of people who have won prestigious medical awards are to be displayed on the university square. The sculptures will be made of bright reflective metal so that students may see their own reflection in them, motivating the students to emulate these award-winning people.

A contemporary clock tower is to be placed within an area of protected pine trees. Next to this area it is planned to make a human-size chess board for those who would like to participate in a calm game within a natural environment away from the intense activity of the campus. Mobile art objects will be placed in the nodes of pedestrian routes. These dynamic art objects aim to encourage passing students to touch them, and in moving them create a continually changing view.
