Seaside House On The Bosphorus, Istanbul

The structure at the entrance of the straight of Bosphorus from the sea of Marmara, built in the late 1930s, was redesigned keeping the footprint and height of the original building constant. The new main building consists of three levels. The ground level being at sea level is used for dining, with an opening to the upper entry level connected to the road by a wood and steel bridge spanning the garden and used as the main living area. Bedrooms are located on the top floor. The annex building is at road side with a terrace garden. It has two levels. The upper level has a private entrance to a studio/guest house. The lower level contains heating facilities and a separate studio for care-takers' residence. The house is accepted as a new interpretation of the “yalı” (seaside house) concept which is a typical Bosphorus phenomenon.
